The Kariobangi South Market is a hub of activity, serving hundreds of vendors and residents daily.

On 16th November 2024, Trimstar Youth Empowerment, in collaboration with the Kenya Red Cross, organized a successful clean-up project around the bustling Kariobangi South Market area. This initiative was a testament to Trimstar's unwavering commitment to its environmental goals, which align with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) on Clean Water and Sanitation (SDG 6) and Life on Land (SDG 15). The Kariobangi South Market is a hub of activity, serving hundreds of vendors and residents daily. However, the accumulation of waste and lack of proper sanitation in the area posed significant health and environmental challenges. Trimstar, driven by its mission to empower youth and promote sustainable living, saw an opportunity to address these issues by engaging the community in a transformative clean-up initiative.

A Community-Led Effort

The clean-up project brought together over 100 volunteers, including Trimstar members, Kenya Red Cross representatives, local residents, and market vendors. Armed with gloves, garbage bags, and cleaning tools, the team worked tirelessly to remove piles of garbage, clear drainage systems, and restore the area’s cleanliness.

Through this effort, over 200 bags of waste were collected and disposed of responsibly. Additionally, the drainage systems around the market were unclogged, reducing the risk of flooding during the rainy season and improving overall hygiene.

Youth Empowerment Through Action

This initiative was more than just a clean-up; it was an opportunity to empower the youth by demonstrating the impact of collective action. Volunteers learned the importance of environmental stewardship and the role they can play in creating healthier, more sustainable communities. The project also fostered a sense of pride and ownership among the participants, inspiring them to champion environmental conservation in their daily lives.

Aligning with Trimstar’s Environmental Goals

The clean-up around Kariobangi South Market is a reflection of Trimstar’s dedication to addressing environmental challenges. By targeting areas with critical sanitation issues, Trimstar actively contributes to achieving SDG 6, which emphasizes access to clean water and sanitation. Furthermore, the project supports SDG 15 by promoting sustainable practices and fostering biodiversity in urban areas.
